WORK UNDERTAKEN
We undertook strengthening of the bridge piers by creating as-built, fabricated split steel brackets. We were required to drill the existing piers to install brackets, and pressure grout to fill the voids. Work was undertaken from a barge with elevated work platforms as access was restricted. We were required to manage several client and contractor interfaces, including the project manager (Auckland Motorway Alliance), design engineer (Opus International Consultants) and the coastguard. We were faced with strict environmental restraints due to the open water and cementitious materials used to strengthen the piers.
Our experience in similar projects allowed the client to understand the extent of cracking to de-risk the project. We worked closely with the client to de-risk environmental impacts on the waterway.
Project Challenges:
- Working at height on a barge
- Working over open tidal water
- Strict environment requirements
- Shift work to work around the tidal changes
