Protecting coatings for Tuakau Bridge

WORK UNDERTAKEN

Tuakau Bridge, located South of Auckland, is an important crossing of the Waikato River. The bridge was constructed in 1933 from reinforced concrete. MaxBuild was contracted to undertake concrete repairs and provide concrete protection to the bridge arches and railings. This was to prevent carbonation and chloride ingress into the concrete. The project was completed in two stages during 2016 using Sikagard-550 Elastic.

Maxbuild developed innovative containment solutions to prevent contamination of Waikato River. In order to  minimise the impact of traffic, rope access was utilised where possible.

Project Challenges:

Challenges to project delivery arose from the inability to close the bridge during project delivery. Other challenges  included the strict environmental controls required when working over the Waikato River.
